Summer Reading Goals

When I was growing up, I had trouble sitting down and reading for long periods of time. My parents were big on education and not letting the mind "rot" over the summer. They had this reading contest that included us 4 kids and 4 or so more kids from the neighborhood. The general goal was  to finish 10 books by the end of the summer. If you were the first one to accomplish the goal you got to choose a place to take everyone on a day trip. Runner ups got toys or something else. I tried every year, and ever year I fell short.
So, as I grew older and wiser, I decided to try, try again. Last summer, I made it! This summer I'm including my adult students. Much like my parents, I am big on not letting the mind "rot" before, during, or after the summer!
What books are you reading this Summer?

The more you know...

It is true what our Basic Skills motto says, "The more you know, the further you'll go, and the brighter your future will be."
The more you read, the more you know, and the bigger and better places you will go. That is my thoughts which is why as I teach my adult students to not only pass their GED tests I tell them to read at home. They ask for books. I have to find books at their level. Some are at 4th grade reading level. So I search and search then it hits me, I am not the only teacher who has this problem.
Let's help eachother and post books, authors, & reading levels here, (until I can figure out a better blog). I am hoping we can work together to make sure that literacy is within reach of everyone.
